My Preciousssss…..

Oh buddy…are you gonna be jealous of me.

My birthday was this weekend, and Bayou Husband got me something that has racked him up enough cool points for like…ever.

I got…..

Carry your library in 10.2 ounces

A Kindle 2 from Amazon.com. And it is so freaking cool. It is my precioussssssssss………..

I could go on and on about how cool it is, and all the nifty features, but you should just go to amazon and check it out for yourself.

While diet coke remains my main vice, I confess that I have a book problem. A big one. A good chunk of our postage-stamp size house is drowning under piles of my books. Books on bookshelves, in closets, under the bed, even in the laundry room. My purses have books in them, as does my car. I even have boxes of books in my parents’ storage unit.

When I was in high school, I often got in trouble for reading in class instead of taking notes. I am a certifiable book nerd. My college dorm room looked like a library. When our house burned down in 2004, I started replacing books that I had lost even before I had a house to put those books in. When I ended up unexpectedly in the hospital, I sent Grandaddy to the bookstore as soon as the poor man walked in the door. Luckily, he helped create my book obsession, so he wasn’t too put out.

Thanks to my new Kindle, I don’t have to try and figure out where else I can stuff more books in this house. And I have instant gratification. If I want the book now, I can have it now. I don’t have to drive 30 minutes, or watch for the UPS man.

It’s Bayou-Mama heaven. I may have to surgically remove it from my hand.

My Preciousssssssss….

Over 275,000 books, newspapers, magazines and blogs

But now, I have to come up with some ultra-cool plan, because his birthday is not only coming up next week, but he will be celebrating the big “30.”

I have an idea or two, but how do you top the perfect gift? I’ll figure that out as soon as I can pry myself away from My Precioussssssss.

  1. OMG! Happy late birthday! I am JEALOUS girl! I bet those things are ultracool! I’m such the book nerd also. I have books everywhere in this house…and more in storage. I saw the Kindle on Oprah and was confused about it at first cause I wasn’t sure what it’s purpose was. Then, when I realized what it actually did, I found myself sooooo wanting one. I bet you are having fun with it 🙂

  2. Ok…you are going to find this funny. Today…which is the day after I posted my first reply to this post…my hubby called to ask me a question about the Mother’s Day gift he wanted to get me. To make a long story short, he finally told me that he wanted to get me a Kindle!! BUT…he wanted to know if I wanted the Kindle2 or the new one (KindleDX) that is coming out later this year. I told him that I will look it up and tell him which one I want…lol. Isn’t that funny? He told me that if I didn’t want the Kindle, that he has something else up his sleeve to get me for Mother’s Day…lol. Do you like yours? Since using it, do you miss the regular books? That is what I would be afraid of…that I would miss having a regular book. Let me know your thoughts on it 🙂

    • Hey Libby,
I love my kindle! It’s a little bit of an adjustment from regular books, but it saves space, and you can download the books instantly, anywhere, which is a big plus for me, as I like instant gratification. Also, the fact that Amazon keeps your books backed up means that you will always be able to re-download them if you ever needed to. The Kindle DX won’t be available until summer, and the only difference is that the screen size is 21/2 times the size of Kindle 2. I actually prefer Kindle 2, because it fits better in my hand, and is a bit more portable. The Kindle DX is really aimed at people who want it mainly for newspapers and magazines. It’s more magazine size, while Kindle 2 is book size.

For me, it is awesome, because I literally am out of room in this house. I could not buy more books without selling some or giving them away, which I hate to do. Now, I don’t have to worry about that!

Let me know how it turns out!

  3. I am glad that you are enjoying your kindle bestest buddy! I still don’t know if I can make the switch. There is nothing like holding a book in your hand and hearing the spine creak as you turn the page. I even like the smell of a new book. I am a sick, sick puppy!! I may have to make the switch though because I am literally drowning in my book collection. Or better yet…maybe its time for a bigger house.

    • I am missing the smell and feel! And the bookstore…But, at this point, I am having to get rid of books becuase I am out of room! At leat now I can have things archived so I don’t have to get rid og them…
